Lymphatic drainage massage is a form of gentle massage that encourages the drainage of lymph nodes and the movement of lymph fluids throughout the body. It is also called Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and should be performed by a certified therapist. This specialized massage involves gently manipulating specific areas of your body with specialized techniques, following a specific drainage pattern within the body. This technique can improve the function of the immune system as well as aid in recovery of a damaged or incomplete lymphatic system. These treatment sessions are tailored to the individual needs of the client to aid their bodies in achieving homeostasis and balance within their immune system and improve lymphatic function. Who should not get a lymphatic massage? There are some conditions and circumstances where lymphatic drainage massage is not recommended: If you have a heart condition. If you have kidney failure. If you have blood clots. Clearance from your physician may be required. Who & why should you get a lymphatic massage? Cancer- Everyone affected by cancer — people in active treatment, those in recovery or survivorship, those at the end of life, and even caregivers. Recent surgery – knee/hip/ankle replacement, breast reconstruction/mastectomy, etc. The lymphatic system helps process waste and absorbs fluids. After surgery, these fluids can harden, which is often painful.
